About the Project

Vehicle Interaction Scenario

One of the biggest potential hazards on a mine site is vehicle interaction. Proper two-way communication, road rules, traffic signage, tagging and isolation, and site rules regarding interaction with other vehicles all need to be obeyed to ensure safety on site.

Before the development of PROJECT CANARY, most mine site inductions and training programs that covered vehicle interaction were delivered by talking about various hazards and what trainees should be doing on the haul roads. In addition, photographs of various accidents are often shown as consequences for not obeying road rules.

Research proves that being informed about hazards and viewing the consequences of accidents are, by themselves, insufficient in initiating behaviour change. It is far more effective for learners to participate in simulated scenarios and see what actually happens on mine site roads and make decisions that need to be made. Practising these skills in ‘real life’ scenarios increases safe workplace behaviour.
